The Chairman of the Education Commission (EC), Dr David Wong, and members of the EC, accompanied by Permanent Secretary for Education, Ms Michelle Li, visited Yaumati Kaifong Association School on 19 June 2023 to learn about its implementation of national education, support for non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students and home-school cooperation.
The members were briefed by the Principal, Ms Mimi Cheung, on the school’s promotion of national education, support for NCS students to master the Chinese language, experience in cultivating an inclusive school culture and development of home-school cooperation. Subsequently, they met some students to learn about their participation in national education activities, and in particular, NCS students’ experience in learning Chinese culture. The students also shared about their school life among classmates of different ethnicity and cultural background. The members then exchanged views with teachers and parents, including those of NCS students, on how to work together to nurture positive values in students.
The members were pleased to note that the students had a keen interest in Chinese culture and appreciated cultural diversity, and that parents of both local and NCS students participated in school activities eagerly. The members encouraged the students to explore their interests and potential, deepen their understanding of the development of Hong Kong, the country and the rest of the world, and unleash their full potential to contribute to society.
